Predictors of Thyroid Gland Invasion in Laryngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Introduction: Laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) can invade the thyroid gland leading to unnecessary thyroidectomies with subsequent hypothyroidism and hyperparathyroidism. Thus, clinicopathological variables should be defined in order to predict thyroid gland invasion preoperatively. Materials and Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of 1,465 patients with laryngeal SCC referr...
متن کاملMerkel cell carcinoma in an immunosuppressed patient*
Merkel cell carcinoma is an uncommon neuroendocrine carcinoma with a rising incidence and an aggressive behavior. It predominantly occurs in older patients, with onset occurring at a mean age of 75-80 years. Recognized risk factors are ultraviolet sunlight exposure, immunosuppression, and, more recently, Merkel cell polyomavirus. We report a case of Merkel cell carcinoma in a young HIV positive...
متن کاملAn Unusual Presentation of Merkel Cell Carcinoma
Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is an uncommon primary cutaneous neoplasm of neuroendocrine cells with a predilection for the head and neck and distal extremities in elderly patients. It is principally a disease of the Caucasian race with an incidence of 0.44 per 100,000 and is very high (8%) among immunsuppressed patients (1, 2). The disease course is difficult to predict and ranges from relativel...
متن کاملMerkel Cell Polyomavirus Strains in Patients with Merkel Cell Carcinoma
We investigated whether Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) patients in France carry Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) and then identified strain variations. All frozen MCC specimens and 45% of formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded specimens, but none of the non-MCC neuroendocrine carcinomas specimens, had MCPyV. Strains from France and the United States were similar.
متن کاملMerkel Cell Polyomavirus DNA in Persons without Merkel Cell Carcinoma
Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) DNA was detected in 88% of Merkel cell carcinomas in contrast to 16% of other skin tumors. MCPyV was also found in anogenital and oral samples (31%) and eyebrow hairs (50%) of HIV-positive men and in forehead swabs (62%) of healthy controls. MCPyV thus appears to be widespread.
